A Stangebär, Ryan Gilko was on his way to work one morning, when his van was rear-ended by Carl Stanton. Ryan rushed to see if Carl was okay, but Carl was infected by the Yellow Plague (something Ryan didn't recognize) and attacked him. Ryan woged and fought off his attacker. However, in the process he was infected. After giving his statement to Detective's Burkhardt and Griffin, he went to collect the insurance details, and was affected by the first stage of the plague, causing him to inappropriately flirt with the female officer.

Later that night, the illness had progressed to the point where he was gaining marks all over his body. The next day while at work he fell into the rage stage of the plague, and violently chased after Monroe and Rosalee who were having a picnic in the park near where he worked. They escaped, but in the process Rosalee was infected. Later Nick and Hank went to the park, and found Ryan, now in the last stage of the illness. He passed out from exhaustion. They took him to the spice shop, and were able to cure him just in time. He was later seen recovering from the illness there.

A Stangebär (SHTAA-nguh-bair; Ger. Stange "rod, spear" + Bär "bear") is a porcupine-like Wesen that first appeared in "Quill".

Characteristics[]

When woged, Stangebärs gain an impressively thick coat of colored quills, or spines, used both for armor as well as camouflage. The color of these quills seems to fluctuate between black and grey. Even between woges, they have been observed to change color.

These quills cover up the majority of their limbs and also sprout out of the top of their heads, interspersing their hair. The spines' consistency seems to be adjustable, since they visibly don't damage any clothes or items that the Stangebär might be wearing. They also gain large sharp black claws and dark eyes, and their skin turns slightly more reddish in color. Like many Wesen, they are stronger in their Wesen form than they are in the human form, as one was only able to throw off his attacker after he woged. However, they do not appear to be superhuman in strength.

Behavior[]

Stangebären are generally peaceful and docile, similar in nature to their fellow rodent Wesen, such as Mauzhertz, Reinigen, and Eisbibers. Unlike Mauzhertz and Eisbibers, Stangebärs are not cowardly and will resort to violence, but only when they have to. They tend to find work in areas that allow them to be outdoors.

Season 2 Blu-ray Grimm Guide Profile[]
