The Schwarzwald (SHVAH⟨ʁ⟩TS-vahlt; Ger. "Black Forest") is a mountainous region in southwest Germany, bordering France. It is known for its dense, evergreen forests and picturesque villages. It was the location where the seven Knights Templar hid a very powerful object, locking it away in a catacomb and creating seven keys that could unlock the box containing the object. However, the blood of a Grimm was also needed to open the box to break the sealant. ("Into the Schwarzwald")
Monroe's German family has strong ties to the Black Forest that have continued into the present, and it is implied that they originated there, having hunted in the forest for centuries. ("Key Move") The Kessler Grimms are also specifically stated to be "of the Schwartzwald". ("Map of the Seven Knights") The Schade family have 'deep roots' in the forest, though the roots of the Schwarzwald Romani are said to run "even deeper". ("Volcanalis")
The modern German Wesen that live in the area, such as the village of Wolfach, are apparently traditionally-minded and do not tolerate the known presence of Grimms, even if they are foreign nationals. When Nick Burkhardt, an American Grimm was discovered while visiting the area ostensibly to only visit Gothic churches, a mob of local Wesen later organized after dark to hunt him down and kill him, including the use of firearms. ("Key Move") ("Into the Schwarzwald")
