Akela Cooper was raised in Hayti, Missouri. She graduated with a MFA at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. In 2009, she was the first recipient of the NAACP/CBS Master Writing Fellowship.
Cooper wrote "La Llorona", one of the most watched episodes of Grimm to date, as well as "Organ Grinder" and "Nameless", both episodes distinguished by their close adherence to the source material.
Cooper left Grimm after Season 2 to become a writer for the CW show The 100.
